Joseph was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He was the youngest son of four siblings. His parents were Edward and Lorraine Hibner.
When he was young, he liked playing baseball, spending time with his grandfather, and did cross country and racquetball, and he liked going to the zoo.
He joined the Unification Church when he was visiting California. After joining the church, he received the blessing with Harue Hibner in 1982 in the 2,075 Blessing Ceremony. They were married for 38 years. During their marriage they had a daughter named Seong-Oea. Joe had one grandson named Jonah, and one granddaughter named Aria. He enjoyed playing baseball with Jonah, and listening to the funny things Jonah would tell him. He bought them many gifts like clothes and toys. It brought him so much joy seeing the grandchildren grow.
Joe spent most of his professional life working for The Secretary of State. He tested truck drivers and updated drivers licenses. He had developed many friendships with his coworkers. He also taught traffic school part-time for many years and Business class to high school students. He was always cheerful and happy to teach. He was very proud to say that he is a teacher. He also had a personal driving service he made for himself to keep him busy during his retirement period.
In 2020, he grieved his wife’s loss, Harue. He had a hard time living each day and smiling. He did his best to be on his own but it was not easy. When he was doing his personal driving business, he met his current wife, Jiashun. They got married in May, 2023. They liked going out to eat together, and spending time with each other and friends.
During Joe’s free time, he relaxed by going to Lifetime Fitness at the pool reading a Joel Olsteen book.He enjoyed the nature of Busse Woods, and talking to his friends on the phone. He talked to his friend David Cooper, aka “Captain!” almost every day. They laughed a lot and he hoped to visit him in North Carolina this year. He also enjoyed going out to breakfast with his brother, John Hibner every Sunday. His favorite meal was oatmeal.
Joe had an open heart to learn a lot about God’s words. He had a library of inspirational words that he shared. Joe liked to serve the church community by cooking at the Memorial Day Picnic. He was very happy to grill with his fellow grill masters and to feed the community.
He spent the last part of his life fighting cancer. He found out he had throat cancer that also spread into his liver and brain in January 2026. He passed away at 11:50 am at home on April 10, 2026 surrounded by loved ones.
He was a loved son, brother, husband, father, p pa, teacher and friend. His smile, laugh, and cheerfulness will be missed by so many people. Let us remember him in our hearts and feel his love from the spiritual world.
