While preparations are being made for a Seonghwa Ceremony in Korea, a Seonghwa Memorial Service will be held in America on Thursday, October 7, at 4:00 PM (EST) at the Belvedere Training Center.

In Loving Memory of Mrs. Hyun Sook Choi Park

Hyun Sook Choi was born on March 10, 1944 in 19 Gyo-dong, Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. She attended Samdeok Elementary School and Shinmyung Middle School for girls in Daegu, and graduated from Gyeongbuk Women's Commercial High School.

In March 1955, she joined the elementary school under the guidance of mother, deaconess Maria Park, as a third-grade student, member of the Daegu Unification Church.

In 1960, she participated in the ‘1st 7-Year Course, 40-day Summer of Enlightenment Witnessing’ as a 2nd-year middle school student. And in 1963, she was part of the 7th group of Sunghwa Students, who completed the 16th National Witnessing Workshop at the Cheongpa-dong Church (Former Church HQ). Upon completion, she then led a pioneering Unification Church planting in Sandong-myeon, Gyeongsan-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

On February 22, 1968, Hyun Sook Choi received Blessing with Pastor Joong Hyun Park in the 430 Couples’ Blessing Ceremony. With Rev. Park, they led the Sokcho Unification Church Trade Headquarters in Yangyang. She then supported Rev. Park in leading the ‘National CARP House in Namsan.' They pioneered CARP chapters in Dongguk University, Dankook University, Chung-Ang University, and Sungjeon University.

In 1971, Hyun Sook Choi became an evangelist of Mokpo Unification Church in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do as part of the ‘National Mobilization of Blessed Wives.’ She then became an evangelist of Samsong Unification Church in Samsong-uep, Goyang, Gyeonggi-do during the ‘National Mobilization of Blessed Wives’ 3-year period.

In 1975, Mrs. Park established the ‘Hwagok Unification Church’ in their home area in Hwagok-dong, Gangseo-gu in Seoul. She organized the purchase of the church building, and conducted the dedication ceremony. (The Hwagok Unification Church building was later sold and a new ‘Gangseo Church Headquarters’ was constructed in Mokdong, Gangseo-gu).

During these years, Mrs. Park fulfilled her responsibilities as the wife of the 14th eldest grandson of the Hoeungongpa of Hamyang Park Clan. She organized and managed the service of the clan’s ancestors, and took care of Rev. Park’s grandparents, siblings, and relatives.

On October 20, 1979, with the permission of True Parents, Mrs. Park, and her four young children joined Rev. Park in America, and immigrated to the US as missionaries.

Upon arriving in America as a new immigrant, Mrs. Park established several businesses to support her family. She established and managed 'Oriental Fair’ an oriental grocery, 'Sun Up’ a stationery store, and 'Sun City’ a health care center. These businesses allowed Mrs. Park to gain economic independence.

At the same time, Mrs. Park supported her husband, Rev. Park in various leadership positions. In 1982, she served as the pastor’s wife in New York and then Washington D.C. KEA new church plant. As a leader’s wife, Mrs. Park participated in the annual fishing tournament in Gloucester, MA, and caught a 1,000 lb (453kg) bluefin tuna with True Parents.

In 1989, Mrs. Park served as wife of the New York, New Jersey Regional Pastor, and in 1994, when Rev. Park was appointed as the North American Continental Director, she continued to support this central position in America.

On April 15, 1995, Rev. and Mrs. Park attended the ‘Holy Marriage Blessing Ceremony’ of Sun Jin Moon with their son In Sup Park.

In 1996, Rev. and Mrs. Park were appointed as National Messiah of Switzerland. They have been committed to this role. They contributed to the development of the Providence in Switzerland, and were dedicated to the construction of the Peace Embassy in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Mrs. Park and Rev. Park led the 'True Family Values' education and 'Blessing Expansion Movement' for Christians and religious communities in the US and Europe. In 2000, Mrs. Park supported the organization of the Blessing Ceremony at the 'One Million Family March' in Washington D.C.

That year, 2000, Mrs. Park received an honorary doctorate in humanities from the Springfield Theological Seminary.

In 2003, Rev. and Mrs. Park returned to Korea to continue their mission. That year, Mrs. Park was inaugurated as the president of the Korean Association of Religious Women, and participated in the ‘Asian Religious Peace Conference’ in Manila, Philippines.

In 2004, Mrs. Park participated in the ‘Israel Peace March’ with Korean religious women leaders in Jerusalem.

Mrs. Park has been devoted to her family. While managing the businesses and supporting the missionary work of Rev. Park, Mrs. Park was dedicated to the well-being and education of her children. Rev. and Mrs. Park have five children, two sons, and three daughters, all educated in Ivy League and top-tier schools.

Mrs. Park was honored with several awards, ‘Over 33 Years of Public Mission Achievement Award,’ ‘Owner of Cheon Il Guk Award’ on Cheon Il Guk Foundation Day, and the ‘Excellent Mother Award.’

Mrs. Park is survived by her loving husband, Rev. Joong Hyun Park, sons and daughters-in-law, In Ho (Andrew) Park and Eun Jin (Grace) Moon, In Sup (Alexander) Park and Sun Jin (Selena) Moon, daughters, and sons-in-law, So Young Park and Juno Kang, So Jeong Park and In Guk Bang, and Soon Hwa Park and Michael Benham, and her grandchildren, Won Young Park, Drew Jun Young Benham, Shin-Ae Kang, and Ae-Jin Bang.

LT Cooper, age 80, passed away on September 11, 2021. He was born on April 26, 1941 to the late Andrew and Grace (Brown) Cooper in LaFollette, Tennessee.

He loved to travel, especially going to the beach. He enjoyed music, fishing, race cars and adored his family. He was a die-hard Marine and served his country in the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sue Cooper; step-son, Todd (Junko) Garrett; sister, Ruth Chaney; grandchildren, Kasey, Connar, and Justin; many nephews, nieces, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Juanita Carter, Edna Cooper, Tommy Cooper, and Ethel Jean Cooper.

LT and Sue participated in the 360,000 Couples Blessing in 1995 officiated by True Parents.

Kayoko Obata Naito was born on October 23rd, 1957 in Niigata, Japan. Raised by her parents Isamu and Kane Obata, Kayoko grew up as the youngest of four siblings Kiyoko, Seiichi, and Takeshige. She was born into a family of Buddhist and Shinto background. Growing up she enjoyed activities such as kendo, badminton, and volleyball. 

After high school, Kayoko worked as a bookkeeper in Shinjuku City, Japan. Despite her comfortable life, Kayoko felt strongly that she needed a purpose greater than just making money. Around that time, she read a book called Shiokari Pass, a true story of a Christian man who sacrificed his life by jumping in front of a train that was moving backward in order to stop it from heading off a cliff. She shed tears thinking about his heart of sacrifice and realizing that there are people like that who exist.

Kayoko was introduced to the Unification movement in 1980 at the Hidakaya Nakai Station in Shinjuku City, Japan. When she heard the Divine Principle, she had the feeling, “I cannot live without the truth.” The teachings answered her questions about life, society, and world affairs. Kayoko joined the Unification movement and dedicated herself as a full-time member in hopes that she could contribute to creating an ideal world by practicing the Divine Principle. From the time she joined, Kayoko flourished under the loving spiritual care of Teruko Yamashita.

While in Kanagawa, Japan, she worked in a church company called “Frontline”, where she sold tools and products that promoted a healthier lifestyle. She worked in the sales/care division that called for a lot of patience and conversation skills.

In 1982, when Father Moon requested Japanese members to come to the United States as missionaries, Kayoko volunteered. She served in states throughout the Northeast engaging in fundraising, pastor evangelism, and babysitting children of full-time missionary parents. During this period, she also attended college for two years studying accounting in Pennsylvania.

Kayoko received the Marriage Blessing with Tetsuaki Naito on January 12th, 1989 as part of the 1275 Couple International Blessing in Yongin, South Korea. Afterward, she served on a witnessing team at the 43rd church building in New York City. She also worked as a staff member at the video center there as well as a Japanese-English translator.

While Kayoko was devoted to her public work, her dedication reflected towards her family members in the same way. While living in New York City, Kayoko gave birth to twin boys Ryota and Junta in 1995. Soon after in 1998, she gave birth to her son Taichiro. Then the Naito family moved to Belleville, New Jersey, and Kayoko gave birth to her final child and only daughter Sayuri in 1999.

In 2002, the Naito family moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey. While raising her children, Kayoko also took on jobs such as being a retail sales associate and sushi clerk. Her love extended to her children’s school, where one day she made bento boxes and taught origami for everyone in the classroom. In her leisure time with her family, she enjoyed going to cherry blossom parks, visiting other family’s homes, and hosting birthday celebrations. She shared with her children that her goal in life is to become a true mother.

In mid-July 2021 Kayoko was diagnosed with cancer, and had a series of strokes. Even with her remaining energy, she would laugh, sing, and smile brightly to encourage family and friends who visited her. In her final moments, Kayoko returned home for hospice care and was surrounded by her family members until she peacefully passed on August 30th, 2021 at 4:35 pm. Kayoko is survived by her husband Tetsuaki; sons Ryota, Junta, and Taichiro; daughter Sayuri; and siblings Kiyoko, Seiichi, and Takeshige.

Kayoko will be forever remembered for her warm, radiant smile and fervent, sacrificial spirit.

Jerzy Wolinski was born in the eastern part of Poland, Biala Podlaska in 1927. He had two sisters, one older brother, and one adopted brother. After his father’s disappearance, his mother told them from now on that only God was their father and moved her family to a Catholic orphanage near Lublin, where they lived until the beginning of WWII. Jerzy developed his deep faith in God and Jesus in the orphanage through prayers, holy hymns, and a strict lifestyle.

He believed that God protected him many times in his life from injuries and death, especially during WWII, while he volunteered at a German tank factory near Dresden. American bombs destroyed the factory where he worked, but luckily, he was not working the day it was bombed.
After the war, Jerzy was able to find his mother and sister after a few months of searching for them

In 1945, Jerzy was arrested and tortured by the Soviet KGB, but was miraculously released after eight months due to his knowledge of operating photo cameras. After his release, he started to learn photography by working at his friend’s studio. After this experience, he was able to open his own photo studio and make a profitable living for his wife and two sons, Janusz and Richard.

In 1968 he had the opportunity to come to the USA, even though it was not possible to leave Poland even for a short visit to Western Countries without invitation. Jerzy left his wife and two sons in Poland, hoping to bring them to the USA eventually, but it took nearly nine years for his wife to join him in NYC. His older son had escaped to Germany earlier, and the KGB seized Jerzy’s photo business. His younger son was later severely tortured because his father didn’t return to Poland as he had promised.

After arriving in New York City, Jerzy became active in Greenpoint, a Polish community in Brooklyn, and finally opened a new photo studio. In 1974 after searching for a new truth, he bought a ticket to hear Rev. Moon speak at Carnegie Hall. There he learned about God’s three biggest headaches: the evils of communism - the anti-Godly philosophy, immorality, and corruption of the human mind and heart, and most importantly, the divisions and denominationalism of religions, especially Christianity.

He was later hired as a photographer by Bo Hi Park, who at the time led the CAUSA movement and gave Jerzy an amazing opportunity to participate in many conferences and learn about the teachings of Godism and the Divine Principle. Jerzy was always eager to share his new understanding of God and God’s providence everywhere he went. By selling his photo studio, he offered money for the down payment of the church center in Hempstead, Long Island.

In 1988, he was matched and Blessed in marriage with a Japanese sister named Teruyo Fujimura, and in 1992 they were given an offering child, Teresa, from a German couple.

He was always full-heartedly involved in all the activities suggested by Rev. and Mrs. Moon; from Christian Crusade and Captive Nations, Yankee Stadium and Washington Monument Rallies, RFK Stadium Blessing, MSG Blessing in 1998, MEPI, ACLC, workshops in Jardim, Pantanal, Soviet Union, UPF in USA and Poland, and by distributing 430 autobiographies of Father Moon the Peace-Loving Global Citizen and the recent edition of Mother of Peace Memoir.

Jerzy was a very social person and enjoyed helping others in ways that he could. He had a very strong faith in God and stood his ground in his beliefs, that no one could shake his faith in God.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Janina, and second wife Teruyo, and his two sons, Janusz and Richard. He will be missed by his two grandsons Matthew and Slawomir, his granddaughter Michelle and four great-grandchildren, all living in the New York area, his adopted daughter Teresa, and many of his spiritual children.

He was taken care of for the last 12 years of his life by Jane and Staffan Berg in Tempe, Arizona, where he witnessed almost every day nearly until the end of his life.

Our beloved sister, Pastor Brenda Joyce Quarells, wife of Rev. Meldon Quarells from Missouri ascended at 6:00 PM August 10, 2021 after her battle with COVID and a kidney condition.

Rev. and Pastor Quarells have always been active and supportive in the American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC) movement. The couple was part of the faithful 172 ministers in 2011 and became a Blessed Central Family in 2018 after completing the steps of the Marriage Blessing. Recently they have helped the development of the Midwest ACLC's Weekly Online Clergy Seminar as an Officiating Couple for the Marriage Blessing.

Brenda was born on Christmas Eve of 1955 in Wilson, North Carolina. The family relocation during her childhood, placing her in Jacksonville, Florida, where she eventually met the love of her life and soulmate, Meldon Quarells. The best friends were married before friends and family in 1977. Brenda and Meldon enjoyed 44 years of matrimony throughout their lives. Brenda is blessed with the birth of six children: Merenda, Melissa, Melaina, Meldon Jr, Miriam, and Matthew, and with seven wonderful grandchildren: Marcus, Mariah, Stevie, Michael, Malachi, Blake, and Brayden.

Her caring and motherly nature allowed for many people to call her Mom, and be blessed with many spiritual children. She is an amazing woman, who gave a legacy of strength, grace, and beauty. Her touch and impact on the lives of countless people, who will forever carry her in their hearts. She will be obsessively missed.

Masako was born January 5, 1951 in Naha City, Okinawa, Japan.  She is the middle child of Shitaro Yamashiro and Kiku Oshiro; her older sister is Miyoko; her younger brother, Masaaki.  She is survived by her husband Petrus, her son Jasun, and her two grandchildren: Koriya and Felix.

Under her sweet demeanor and joyous laugh was a fierce and loyal friend; one that would help and encourage others to be their best self.  One that would show up and be her best self for them.

After graduating from the University of the Ryukyus with Bachelors's in English and Psychology, she joined the Unification Church and dedicated her life to God and True Parents, a decision that would shape the rest of her life.  Masako quickly found herself appointed to leadership positions.  She would spend the next decade traveling the world, counseling church members, and translating for spiritual leaders.  This natural, counseling leadership would express itself in whatever she endeavored.

As a wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend, coworker, she would bring a deep love that would not shy away from challenges.  While her mind was always on the big picture, she always made sure to enjoy the simple, everyday moments of life.  She spent her remaining days spending time with her grandchildren, building a business for their prosperity, and having brunch with the whole family every Sunday.  Her presence will be missed, but her essence will be in our hearts forever.

Masako passed away on July 22, 2021, three days after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Masako’s memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on August 1, 2021 at Portland Family Peace Fellowship (2620 Hughes Dr. West Linn, OR 97068). The viewing will be available an hour before the service.

Our beloved brother Pudtisan "Nong" Nilpradab, 360,000 Blessing Couple (1995), ascended on July 22, 2021 due to complications from a pulmonary infection. He passed at 69 years old and is survived by his wife, Chalaiporn "Pam", their son Kavin (29), and Pam's mother. He was active in the church community by serving on the local council and visiting Camp Mozumdar whenever he could offer volunteer work. He truly loved people.

Jim Rigney was born on February 11, 1944 in Waltham, Massachusetts. He joined the Unification Movement in Boston on Feb 11, 1978 and was Blessed in marriage with Leslie Foster Olivas on February 17, 2013 in Korea.

Jim served in the Boston Family Church as assistant to the Pastor. He fundraised for the Boston Family Church and also on MFT and was a top fundraiser. He worked for Seilo Machinery. Jim lived on the Ivory Coast of Africa and was effective in leading witnessing, starting businesses, and fundraising. Jim was helpful in starting the first Internet Service Provider in Nigeria. He traveled all over Africa evaluating fishing businesses. He served as Continental Leaders for Africa and also attended 14 Middle East Peace Initiatives.

Returning to America, he managed the Manhattan Center and showed how it could become a profitable business. Jim attended the Unification Theological Seminary and also started a Real Estate business in Redhook NY. In 1990, after returning to Africa, he also served in Tula, Russia for three years, educating many teachers and students about the Divine Principle. In 1996, he returned to the USA, working in Real Estate and helping with ACLC.  

After receiving the Marriage Blessing in 2013, Jim and his wife Leslie moved to Las Vegas, where they have been helping with UPF. 

Jim has given many donations for IPEC, for Africa, for the church, for UPF, and for individual members. He sponsored two families to come to America, one from Liberia and one from Jardin. He has liberated his 430 generations of ancestors and is working to be a Choengbo victor.

Jim's deepest passion was to develop a database of True Father's speeches, categorized with over 60,000 terms to understand the “Blueprint for Creation” that True Father spoke about. That work will continue. He also enjoyed sharing his experiences with Second Generation and encouraging them on their way. 

Jim passed quickly and unexpectedly on June 24, 2021. He leaves behind his loving wife, a brother and sister, two daughters, four grandsons, five step-sons, and three step-grandchildren. 

Jim was grateful to serve True Parents on Earth or in Heaven. It has been and is an honor to know him and to love him.

Chiemi Tanaka was born on June 9, 1969 in Iwakuni, a town in Yamaguchi, Japan. She was the middle child of Hideo and Mieko Kimura, with an older sister and younger brother.

While growing up in Iwakuni, Chiemi enjoyed singing songs with Karaoke. She even won a prize at a Karaoke festival. She was also on the basketball team in high school. Chiemi moved to live on her own after being admitted to Yokohama National University studying Biology. She was then introduced to CARP and decided to join the FFWPU Japan.

Following the guidance of True Parents to the Japanese missionaries at the time, after graduating from Yokohama National University, Chiemi moved to America and attended a 40-day workshop before going to the University of Bridgeport to study English. There she met her husband, Yasuhisa Tanaka, and was matched with him. Chiemi received the Marriage Blessing with Yasuhisa on August 25, 1995 as part of the 360,000 Couples group. After graduating the University of Bridgeport, Chiemi attended Unification Theological Seminary together with her husband.

Chiemi returned to Japan and worked as a teacher and sales assistant for a few years, as well as enthusiastically participated in the evangelistic efforts of CARP. While in Japan her first daughter, Shiho Tanaka was born. Chiemi later moved back to America to join her husband in supporting the ministry of the Brooklyn Church. It was also at this time that her second daughter, Reina was born.

Chiemi was a hard-working and devoted mother, who adored her children, and did everything she could for them. She loved taking photos and videos of her family and friends, cherishing the moments she had with them.

While taking care of her children, Chiemi began to work in New York as a sales assistant and later worked at a dermatology clinic. In 2018 Chiemi was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery. She kept a positive attitude and continued chemotherapy and radiation for a few weeks, and was grateful to start working again in New York after cancer went into remission. However, in 2020, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to Chiemi’s bones and later to her liver. Even though she was in so much pain she tried to stay positive for her friends and loved ones.

Chiemi ascended to the spirit world on June 7, 2021 with her family and friends by her side. She is survived by her husband, Yasuhisa, daughters Shiho and Reina, father, Hideo, and younger brother, Shoichi.

Chiemi will be remembered fondly as a positive and caring person with a compassionate heart who dedicated her life to her family and faith community.

Laura Lee Taylor Hayashi was born on March 19, 1953 to Rebecca Borton and John Ross Taylor in Hollywood, California. Her father went to serve in WWII and unfortunately upon his return home, had an accident that caused mental deficiencies leading to his institutionalization for the rest of his life. Laura was fortunate in that her mother was a highly educated woman and a veterinary doctor who was able to support them financially, although had to change jobs frequently growing up, uprooting them to different cities and states throughout her childhood. Laura’s grandmother Carrie Borton stepped up to help them and moved in to help care for Laura acting as a mother figure, in her words.

Rebecca was a devout Presbyterian Christian but understood the importance different religions played on the overall spiritual education of many individuals and encouraged Laura to search and study to find her own sense of spirituality. Laura attended University at the University of Iowa for one year, studying Philosophy, believing it to be an academic discipline that encouraged the love of learning only to realize the professors in that department only loved hearing themselves speak. She subsequently left the University to search for purpose and found herself living and working with a communist commune. She quickly learned the principles of communism were idealistic but flawed and moved back home with her mother. Upon returning home, she met her old neighbor Christine who had always been sickly but was now glowing. Christine introduced the Divine Principle, and Laura dedicated the rest of her life to the Unification Church and world peace and unification.

Laura received the Holy Marriage Blessing with Yasuhiro Hayashi on July 1, 1982, and has helped him fulfill his mission in the fish business given to him by True Father. They worked for years with Happy World and then started their own business Miracle Fish, running it together side by side for over 25 years. In her 30’s, Laura completed her college education at George Washington University in Washington D.C., receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Throughout her adulthood she applied psychology to many facets of helping others and found one of the most fulfilling methods working with Trauma Resolution Therapy, assisting others in processing their traumas to gain perspective so that they could move forward with their lives in the happiest and most fulfilling way possible for them.

Laura transcended to the spiritual world on May 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM in her home in the arms of her husband and dear friend Jan Breslin. She is survived by Yasuhiro and her three children, Matthias, Sammuel, and Yoshika, and one grandchild Noah Yasuhiro Montero-Hayashi, son of Yoshika. Laura not only dedicated her life to the Unification Church but also dedicated her life to loving others unconditionally. She made it a point to be there to hold hands, sing, and listen to loved ones through their difficulties, hardships, and through their transitions into the spiritual world. Laura brought an endless fountain of joy into the world and connected people to one another through shared joys and experiences. Laura worked tirelessly in understanding herself and her relationship with God. She was a profoundly loving mother and wife and taught her family patience and understanding, asking her children to notice five things in nature every day. She was a living poem and will be missed dearly by her friends and family.

Rand Gerald Tickner was born in Canada on March 4, 1949. When young, he was adopted by Frank and Francis Tickner and grew up in Rio Linda, California, just outside of Sacramento. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968. He served in Vietnam, where he saw his entire squad killed and survived by the grace of God. He received commendation and retired as Gunnery Sergeant rank.

Rand married Eileen McDonald in 1972 and had two sons, Tim and Gerald. They divorced in 1989. Rand retired from the Marine Corps in 1991, while stationed in Okinawa, Japan. There, he met his current wife, Kazuko. They were married on April 27, 1991. Six years later, Rand and Kazuko, received the Marriage Blessing of 3.6 million couples held by Father and Mother Moon on November 29, 1997.

The next year, 1998, they moved to California; later they moved to Oregon; then finally, to Wasilla, Alaska in 2011, where he built his own home. He was an excellent carpenter and was in the process of building his often spoken-about dream: a museum in Alaska for the Heavenly Parents’ Holy Community. At one point, he went to Kodiak to help construct the addition to Father and Mother Moon’s residence, North Garden.

Rand died of stomach cancer and other complications on April 27, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Kazuko; his two sons, Tim and Jessica Tickner, and Gerald Tickner; his half-brother, Andy Tickner; and seven grandchildren, Danielle, Kaylie, Carter, Emmalyn, Samantha, Josh, and Johnny.

We celebrate the passing of Inje Yeo, husband of Soonyang Lee. Together they have two children, their daughter Jooyoung Yeo and son Jinwon Yeo.

Inje’s parents, Sukdong Yeo and Youngok Lee, are part of the 430 Blessed Couples. Inje was born on January 8, 1970, and graduated from Sun Moon University. He was Blessed in marriage to Soonyang Lee on August 25, 1992. He had worked at Seil Travel Company in Seoul and in 2006, they came to the United States and eventually settled in Oregon. He and his wife have been working at their own Sushi Restaurant in Oregon. 

Inje passed away quietly after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife and two children.

He was a dedicated and sincere husband and father caring for his family.

A filial son to his parents who are living in Korea. He was a victorious son of True Parents.

Hiroko Kamata was born in Fukushima, Japan, on August 2, 1961, as the eldest daughter to Kenzo and Kyoko Saito.

She was introduced to the Unification faith in 1987 and led a faithful life attending God and True Parents. She has participated in many Kodan activities, many where she had to travel to another state away from family to fundraise and witness to many people. There was one instance where she fundraised for Kodan for 40 days, both in NY and LA, even as a mother of three at the time. As a devoted person of faith, Hiroko would attend and invest her all to the directions of True Parents and central figures faithfully. Despite the challenges in the language barrier and physical limitations, Hiroko continued to witness and Bless couples for God’s Providence with her strong will and determination, her whole heart, and consistent effort.

In August of 1992, Hiroko was Blessed in marriage with Takayuki Kamata as part of the 30,000 couples by True Parents. On October 10, 2020, she was registered to the CheonBo Won as a CheonBo couple. 

After the Blessing in 1993, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, to live with her husband who already lived there. Since moving to Minnesota in 2016, she has been supporting the family as a housewife, where she was a hardworking and loving mom who always thought for the best of her family, keeping them in her prayers. Hiroko has been the center of the household full of boys, shining brightly among her husband and sons. 

On May 1, 2021, at around 9:30 PM, Hiroko suddenly experienced cardiac arrest and collapsed. Despite the technological support and medications to help her improve, she continued to be in a coma, and her vitals slowly stopped functioning. On May 3, 2021, at 1:39 AM, Hiroko ascended to the Spiritual World surrounded by her family at the age of 59. 

She is survived by her husband, Takayuki, and her sons, Michimasa, Hiroaki, Houshin, and Houjun.

As an immensely loved mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, she will be remembered and missed by all of us.

Sister Matilde Barrios was a native of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico where she was born on July 19, 1934. She was one of 14 children born to the Barrios family. Her father, Javier Francisco Barrios, originally from Cuba, was a farmer. The mother, Vicenta Velazquez, was a native of Puerto Rico.  Matilda kindly remembered her father’s affectionate attitude towards her and her brothers and sisters. Her mother was much stricter in her parenting approach in the family. The 1930s were very challenging times in Puerto Rico, with economic depression bringing real frustrations in providing for the family, let alone taking care of ones ‘self.

In 1957 at the young age of 23, the opportunity came for Matilde to move to the mainland, USA, where she established her domicile in the City of New York. She found various opportunities to work as she settled herself. The Hispanic community then was primarily made up of Puerto Ricans who migrated to the mainland for much better economic opportunities, and it must also be remembered that these same Puerto Ricans who spoke Spanish with their uniquely beautiful Caribbean culture were also full-fledged Citizens of the USA.

In 1975, a young man named Michael Downey first met Matilde and introduced her to the Unification Church as it was then called. Matilde joined the movement as a ‘home member’ dedicating herself in study and living the lifestyle of the Divine Principle.  She along with a number of early Hispanic members, Juan Morales, Antonio Betancourt, Esteban Galvan, Elio Roman, and others laid the foundations for the development of the Latino outreach ministries. Matilde associated herself with the Unification Church located at 4 West 43rd St where she attended services regularly. Matilde loved Father and Mother Moon. She loved to share the truth of the Principle with others and would sometimes feel very troubled when witnessing efforts were not front and center of activities. She would say in her uniquely beautiful sounding accent, “how can we grow if we don’t share this message with other people!” “Let’s go to Bryant Park to meet people.” Her home, located in midtown, became a location of Home Church activities, prayers, and Divine Principle study. Matilde remained faithful to True Parents from the day of her joining in 1975 to the day of her transition, 46 years of devotion.

Challenging medical conditions visited her in recent months as she found herself in and out of the hospital. In the end, she felt the calling of her loving Parent in Heaven, choosing to remain home in spite of another medical crisis demanding hospital care. Her spiritual son, Manuel Resto, was present with her on the evening of April 16 as she journeyed to her eternal hometown.

James Michael Christopher (Jim) Mathison passed peacefully at home in his sleep to his eternal life, April 9, 2021 after battling throat cancer for the last three years. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and June (Laursen) Mathison. Jim is survived by his uncle Benny Laursen, his loving wife of nearly 39 years Flore Irene (Noel), Kathy Burke (John); Daniel Mathison (Ellen); Tom Mathison (Judy); and four beloved nieces and nephews.

Jim was the oldest of four and born on August 17, 1946, in the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father was Protestant and his mother Catholic. Jim grew up in a loving family and loved his parents and siblings dearly his entire life. He loved to be outside in nature and to observe birds and animals. In his youth, he explored the world around him and would go fishing with friends at the nearby Mississippi River. Jim served as an altar boy, went to St. Joseph Catholic grade school and De LaSalle Catholic High School. After graduating from high school he joined the Navy and served his country in Vietnam. He returned to Minneapolis and majored in Sociology at the University of Minnesota. At the University he met Jean Pierre Gabriel who introduced him to the Divine Principle and the Unification Movement. He was so inspired by the vision and work of the movement that he joined and threw himself wholeheartedly into it. He was involved in many activities including campus outreach, fundraising, evangelism, teaching, and attended the Unification Theological Seminary (UTS). In much of the late ‘70s and ‘80s, Jim was a bus driver for the touring company Go Tours of New York.

In 1979 Jim was introduced to his wife Flore Noel by Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, founders of the Unification Movement. In 1982 they participated in the historic 2075 couple Marriage Blessing at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Like his parents who through their marriage bridged the religious divide between Catholic and Protestant, Jim and Flore, in their marriage, bridged the racial divide between black and white. Together Jim and Flore maintained their devout life of faith involving themselves in missionary activities as much as it was possible for them to do. On January 1, 1997, they took on the mission of National Messiah to Zaire (Congo) which was on the verge of civil war. Even with such an uncertain future Jim and Flore put their faith in God and went to their missionary country. After 19 months they returned to Minnesota. Jim drove a city bus in Minneapolis for many years. He loved music, was a good piano player, and faithful church choir member. Jim was always interested and active in the development of our local church and occasionally gave sermons. He loved to study and teach Divine Principle and was especially excited about teaching the Parallels of History. Jim told Flore that one of the nuns at St. Joseph Grade School told him that his confirmation name, Christopher, meant “bearer of Christ in heart”. Jim always remembered that and remained faithful to that name.

He will be remembered, revered, and missed by all who knew him.

Steve Tamayo was born as the 9th of 13 children in Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 3, 1951 to Joseph and Angela Landeros-Tamayo. 

Steve’s father was a railroad man. Steve’s fondest memories were growing up with all his brothers and sisters in a train car bought from the railroad for 500 dollars. (His dad built a lean-to to extend the home). Steve would tell stories about his father’s work on the railroad and traveling to pick fruit on farms in the summer. The train car his dad bought has actually been restored as a famous car of that time and is in a museum.

Steve started his college years at the University of Wyoming. In his second year, he met Susan Star who introduced him to Unification principles in 1977. Soon after joining the church he went to the Mobile Fundraising Team and worked in the Texas region for a year or so and then was invited to New York to work with the Spanish newspaper, Noticias del Mundo, where he worked until he chose to be matched and Blessed in marriage with Jerry Tamayo in 1982. 

He joined IOWC (International One-World Crusade) for a short time in 1983 until he was admitted to the Unification Theological Seminary (UTS) in Barrytown, NY in 1984. 

In 1987, Lewis and Marielle Pearlman offered a child to the Tamayo family. Sung Min was born on September 16, 1988. This began a new life for the Tamayo family. Side note, Sung Min is the only 3rd generation male that carries on the Tamayo name. 

Steve went on to finish his Bachelor’s at Regis College in 1986 and graduated with a Master’s of Religious Education from UTS in 1989.

That same year True Father picked seven new state leaders, and one was Steve. He was sent to Kansas where he stayed for four years before being transferred to his hometown in Cheyenne, WY where he was state leader until 1994. Soon after, Steve and Jerry applied to be dorm parents for GOP (General Orientation Program) for Blessed Children in Korea. 

As dorm parents, Steve and his wife took care of the daily lifestyle of the children. He also taught and kept the children abreast on their English subjects for the next 8 years. 

Steve and Jerry returned to America in 2002 where Steve taught music at a charter school for a year to all grade levels: Kindergarten to eighth grade. Steve loved music; he bought his first guitar at a thrift store for $3! He learned and played classical guitar. 

In 2003, Steve and Jerry opened an ad hoc homeschool program for Blessed Children which lasted until 2014. During those 11 years, they traveled to quite a few places across America setting up schools and taking in young people from around the world. Steve had many vocations during those 11 years and enjoyed his work both with the Blessed Teens Academy (BTA) and his company jobs. Many of the children remember Steve as a kind and generous spirit; humble, intelligent, patient, fatherly figure. 

For the last five and a half years, Steve focused on his family, remaining in Aurora, CO where his son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren live. 

Steve had a deep love for God, Jesus Christ, and True Parents. He often would say how he felt the grace of God in his life many times over. Recently, when he became ill, his son asked him, “Dad, how are you feeling?” and he said, “Son, in my youth I really felt I was going to die young. I believed I would die before I was forty. I feel the grace of God having been able to live these past 30 years and grateful to have raised my family.”

Steve died peacefully in his sleep after having suffered several months with esophageal cancer. Steve was a man of great diplomacy and grace. He never complained and never blamed, always allowing each person in his presence to be who they were however they were. Anyone who knew Steve Tamayo would say that his heart was deep like an ocean and calm like a sea. 

He is survived by his wife Jerry Tamayo and son, Sung Min Tamayo, daughter-in-law Tami Tamayo, and grandchildren Elijah, Kaelen, and Khora. He is also survived by his siblings Ramona, Helen, Dalores, Maria, Teresa, Josephine, Juan, Antonio, Tomas.

Mariko Yoshitome Geller was born on May 8, 1950 in the town of Satsuma Sendai, Kagoshima Prefecture, in Kyushu, Japan. She is the fourth child of six, including one sister and four brothers. Her parents worked hard to care for their family. Dad was a city government employee and Mom tended to the family, grew rice, raised chickens, and did volunteer work in the community.

There is a famous quote by Maya Angelou that says, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Mariko was the kind of person who always cared about other people’s feelings and did her best to make them feel better in any way she could. From her contagious smile and laugh to her love for singing and cooking, she truly enjoyed sharing her gifts with the world. She was quiet by nature but left a big imprint in her strong devotion to her faith and love for her family.

From an early age, Mariko was inspired by America and Christianity. She attended a Catholic High School and went on to study English Literature at a local junior college. While studying, she met Mrs. Midorikawa, her spiritual mom. Mariko joined the Unification family in 1970 but returned home to help care for her ailing father. She returned one year later and was sent out to fundraise in Tokyo and many other cities. In 1978 she was sent to England where she worked making bento lunch boxes to raise money for the movement in England.

In June of 1982, Mariko was matched to Barry Geller in the Grand Ballroom of the New Yorker Hotel. They were Blessed in marriage one week later at Madison Square Garden. They are part of the 1800 couple Blessing. Mariko returned to England to finish her work in the Bento business, returning to America one year later. Barry and Mariko began their family life in Chicago, 1983, while both working for Saeilo Machinery. Mariko worked in Saeilo’s automotive division, as the team mother. Barry and Mariko were later assigned to manage a machine tool sales and service center in Toledo, Ohio and it was there that their first daughter Marry was born. Mariko cared for children while in Toledo. The following year, Barry made the decision to attend Unification Theological Seminary and Mariko along with Marry joined several months later in the fall of 1985. Mariko spent her days caring for toddlers at the nursery, on the UTS campus. She enjoyed working under the direction of Mrs. Marie Ang. In January of their second year at UTS, Valerie was born.

After graduating from UTS, Mariko and Barry moved to Tucson, Arizona, and took on their assigned role as City Leaders, during the Inter-denominational Conferences for Clergy providence. Mariko helped to maintain the center and cared for their growing family. She also spent time fundraising and visiting ministers.

In the spring of 1988, they were reassigned to Brooklyn, NY during the “Return to Hometown Providence.” Just after their arrival in July, 1988, Mariko gave birth to a son, Andrew. Mariko made a promise to Heavenly Parent to offer a child, during a special seminar in 1987. A few years later, upon learning of Mariko’s pregnancy, the Gellers decided to offer that child to another couple. Mariko was very glad to be able to help another couple have a child.

Several months later, the Gellers moved to Rockaway Beach, where Barry’s parents live. Just prior to moving, their third daughter Tamaru was born. Mariko spent the next nine years in Rockaway Beach, raising children. In the fall of 1999, they moved to New Jersey. Mariko worked as a bookkeeper at True World Group. In 2006, she began working at the Clifton Church and sang in the choir, performing at various events and at prayer breakfasts in many American Clergy Leadership Conference churches. Mariko traveled to the Holy Land in December of 2003 and participated in the meaningful events of that trip. She also represented New Jersey on a Women’s Federation for World Peace trip to North Korea. Barry and Mariko were inaugurated in 2006 as the District Pastor Couple in Region 3, (including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware). They continued in that position until 2010.

Sadly, one year later, Mariko was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2013, Andrew, Barry, and Mariko traveled to Japan to visit Mariko’s family. After some travel in Japan and visiting Mariko’s family, they returned home to New Jersey. Barry and Mariko have remained in New Jersey ever since. After a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease, Mariko ascended peacefully on March 20, 2021 at 3:00 AM.

Mariko is survived by her husband, Barry, and children: Marry Sun Jin, Valerie Aiko, Andrew, and Tamaru. Mariko is fondly remembered as a kind and gentle person, who almost never uttered a word of complaint. She was a blessing to her family and our church community. May she rest in peace in her eternal home.

Kazumi Murray (Adachi) was born in Yabugun, Hyogo Prefecture, JAPAN.  She was the youngest of 3 siblings.  Her parents were Toshimichi and Mi-Haru  Adachi.  Kazumi moved to Osaka and graduated from a 2-yr Junior College and became a Kindergarten teacher.  

Most important to her was music. She joined an amazingly unique, spiritual choir and traveled throughout Japan singing. In 1978, she was attracted to the Unification Church through a traveling I.O.W.C. promoting the New Hope Singers on a poster. When she learned the teachings that answered questions that nobody else could, she joined the Unification Church.

In 1982 she came to America and was Blessed in marriage with Ken Murray in the 2,075 Blessing Ceremony. Ken and Kazumi have had a very happy married life right from the beginning. Kazumi gave birth to two wonderful children, Amy and Canaan who are both married now, and she became a grandmother last year with the birth of Rosalie, Amy’s first child. She became a wonderful, loving mother always sharing messages from the heart.

Kazumi has kept busy always reaching out to help others, wherever she goes. She lived in Atlanta for a few years doing mission work, leading fund-raising teams, signature campaigns, C.A.U.S.A. But she will always be remembered for her kindness and deeply caring heart, giving hope and encouragement to those with who she worked. Her passion came to be working with churches and meeting pastors and befriending them. Her love for America was sparked by the beautiful Christian spirit here. She is always moved so deeply when she meets people who genuinely love God!

After moving to Chicago she jumped right in and worked with other missionaries visiting churches and meeting God. Loving Christian pastors. Here, her two passions could be fused together finally and her love for being with those who love the Lord, her passion for music, learning Christian songs she would sing from the depth of her heart bringing the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

In addition to everything else, Kazumi worked full-time at Trader Joe’s for twenty years.  As always, ‘investing her entire being into her work and the people she worked with.  “work willingly at whatever you do, as though it were for the Lord, rather than for people.” (Coloss. 3:23 NLT )  Whatever she did, it would always come from the depths of her heart, like she was on a mission from God, and later, the rest of us would feel so profoundly moved, even to tears by her giving.

Kazumi left us suddenly, completely unexpectedly.  She never complained about herself, so it was difficult to know how serious her situation was.  Whenever she was in pain or frustrated, this was what she was known for, she would simply yell out:  “THANK-YOU GOD!!!”

She was a loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be missed by so many people and will continue to love us in the spiritual world.

Fumiko was born as the only surviving child to Kyushin & Sachiko Yamamoto on June 27, 1950 in Fukuoka, Japan. Her family was rice farmers amidst the hardships of WWII. Despite sickness as a child, Fumiko worked hard in the rice fields and enjoyed basketball in junior high. While in driver’s training to become a chauffeur, she was witnessed to and joined the Unification Church on July 7, 1976.

On June 27th, 1982, Fumiko traveled to the United States, and was matched to David Bruner on the same day of her arrival! They were Blessed three days later on July 1, 1982 at Madison Square Garden, New York. Fumiko participated in various missions in Tennessee, New Jersey, and  New York, until David and Fumiko moved to Colorado in 1993, which was David’s hometown. Fumiko quickly became known as a fantastic cook, providing meals for the Denver community, as well as attending True Parents whenever they came to Colorado.

After fifteen years of efforts to conceive, David and Fumiko joyfully received their offering child, Reuel Jin. The family traveled to Japan several times to share their blessings, and to take care of Fumiko’s parents as they aged. For Fumiko and David, becoming parents has been one of their greatest joys and missions.

Fumiko made many contributions to God’s providence, and most recently, her couple celebrated accomplishing the Cheonbo Registration. 

Fumiko passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2021. She is survived by her husband David, and her son Reuel Jin. She will always be remembered for her unquenchably joyful spirit and her radiant smile.

Barbara Alice Karnowski ascended to her eternal home at 4:00 AM on February 20, 2021 at the age of 68. She was surrounded by family at the time of her passing.

She was born in Baudour, Belgium to Lucianne Jean and Yvon Passelecq on February 10, 1953. Her childhood was spent in Frameries, Belgium, and she attended a boarding school at Saint-Ghislain. She then was accepted into Marguerite Bervoets Lycée de Mons, during which she visited the United States for 6 months. She also later traveled to Germany, France, the Netherlands, Canada, the former Yugoslavia, Italy, Sweden, Tunisia, Luxembourg.

After graduation, she went to Brussels to study biology at the university and then went on to study nursing at IESPP (Institut d’Enseignement Secondaire Paramedical Provincial in Mons, Belgium). She worked as a registered nurse for 28 years, where she primarily worked at the Holton Community Hospital in Holton, Kansas. She then went on to work at the Surgical Center in Manhattan, Kansas, Meadowlark Retiring Home in Manhattan, and finished her career at Florence Crittenton Center in Topeka, Kansas.

She was a humanitarian who sincerely wanted to change the world for the better. She dedicated her life to her faith as a member of the Unification movement. As a missionary, she traveled to London, England; Lesotho, Africa; and many different states in America. She also studied in Korea and visited Japan.

In December 1980, she traveled to New York City seeking a spouse. There she was introduced to Richard Karnowski. She was taken aback by his charming personality, handsomeness, and his successful career as an accountant. They were Blessed in marriage on July 1, 1982, in Madison Square Garden, New York City. He survives.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her father’s partner, Monique, and three siblings: Karine, Marion, and Grégoire (Brigitte De Smet) Passelecq. She is also survived by her four daughters: Rachel (Jean Phillipe) Simul, Belgium; Rebecca (Keiji) Zushi, Omaha, NE; Sarah (Kensei) Tsubata, Hyattsville, MD; and Christelle (Joshua) Carlson, Emmett, KS. She loved her six grandchildren, Joe Jonathan, Isaiah, Abigail, Lilia, Hana, and Edwin, and was happy to hear that one more grandchild is on the way.

She loved to play classical guitar, folk dancing, and bird watching for cardinals. The closest thing to her heart was the education of children to understand the heart of God. She led Sunday schools, helped summer family camps, supported local youth ministry, and organized youth service projects. Her legacy lives in our hearts as we remember Barbara’s warm smile and helping hand that she gave to whomever she could.

She was loved and will be in many of our thoughts!
